I love letters. The real thing. tangible, personal, emotional. Words are wonderful, but sometimes not enough to convey the feelings or thoughts of another person. When witten by hand and held within an envelope they become so much more precious.

In a world that every day is increasingly lived through technology, the letter is so important in maintaining real physical and emotional connection with others.

Richard Seymour spoke at AGIDEAS last week and talked briefly about a device currently under development. Made of a plastic substance and worn around the wrist, when caressed it sends an sms-signal to it's partner device, wherever it is in the world. The second device will glow. I think it's a lovely romantic notion... but the idea that a little piece of plastic communicates love, irks me a little.

hey sweets - i was trawling through some journal articles for my own uni work and found this one:

Connections Among People, Things,
Images, and Ideas: La Habana to Pina and Back
Patricia L. Sunderland & Rita M. Denny
Consumption, Markets and Culture,
Vol. 8, No. 3, September 2005, pp. 291–312

i only looked through the first couple of pages, and have no idea if its related at all to your thesis but hey, you're supposed to read through a hell of a lot of stuff, right? it's photographically based which i've never come across before in academic stuff (although i don't study visual arts so i probably wouldn't know...)

if you're interested, but can't hook yourself up with it through your own uni let me know and i'll download the pdf and send it through.

ps those old letters are gorgeous.
